My Personal Transformation Story
For years, I was told I was in ‘excellent health.’ Western medicine gave me a clean bill, but deep inside, I knew something was wrong.
Behind the outer façade of great health, I was struggling – really struggling.
I battled eating disorders that controlled me, anxiety that weighed heavily on my mind, aches and pains that made me feel decades older, and excruciating periods that made me dread that time of each month.
On top of it all, PTSD from years of abuse haunted me, leaving my spirit shattered. My energy levels were so low that I could barely function, and frequent stomachaches and acne breakouts only added to my feelings of frustration and despair.
And yet, they called this excellent health?
I couldn’t believe it. I refused to believe it.
So I went on a relentless quest for healing. I explored every avenue, because I believed, deep within me, that I had the power to heal myself. I tried everything – yoga classes that promised inner peace, long silent meditation retreats that promised to soothe my soul, diets that promised physical perfection – Keto, Paleo, Raw Vegan – you name it, I tried it. I sat through endless talk therapy sessions, poured over online forums late into the night, and read self-help books cover to cover, desperately hoping for a solution.
But nothing lasted.
The relief was always fleeting, like a mirage that disappeared as soon as I felt I was getting close. I had no idea what was really causing my suffering.
Like me, you too may have tried everything out there that promises you great health. But how can we possibly heal what we don’t know?
Western medicine, for all its brilliance in treating acute emergencies, does not teach us how to live a life that heals us from the inside out. It offers quick fixes, but for each prescription, there is a list of related side effects, a new set of symptoms we have to deal with each time we try to benefit from it.
I didn’t want to live dependent upon medication. I wanted to feel free. I wanted to take charge of my health, to truly heal.
That’s when I found Ayurveda, the world’s most ancient healing system. Rooted in oral tradition, Ayurveda taught me what modern medicine couldn’t: that my symptoms were merely the tip of the iceberg.
Beneath the surface lay the real issues – the root causes were hidden in my daily choices, my lifestyle and food.
After just a few weeks of living according to Ayurveda’s wisdom, I felt a profound shift. My mind, once a storm of anxiety, began to settle. For the first time in years, I slept peacefully through the night. The nightmares, insomnia and endless anxiety started to fade, replaced by a calm I hadn’t known was possible for me.
My relationship with food began to heal, too. After years of seeing it as the enemy, I started to see food as my friend, an ally in my healing journey. My stomach stopped hurting within a week. I could finally digest my food! Within a month, my skin cleared up – no more need for every lotion and potion known to womankind to battle the nonstop breakouts. My painful periods, once unbearable, became a non-issue. No more prescription pills, no more agony. I barely noticed when my cycle arrived.
But healing is never a straight path. Even after years of living in Ayurvedic bliss, life threw me two major curveballs – one physical, one spiritual.
First, I discovered that someone I studied with, someone I trusted, was actually out to harm me by trying to stop me from publishing the book they told me to write in the first place. Narcissistic abuse cracked open old wounds, and I watched in despair as my hard-earned clear skin broke out again.
Then, as if the universe wasn’t finished with me yet, I found myself in a life-threatening car accident – a three-car pileup that left my neck damaged from whiplash. I walked away from the ER with a heavy-duty prescription for painkillers I never took, because Ayurveda had already taught me a better way
These challenges didn’t break me. Instead, they deepened my commitment to my own healing journey. I could have fallen back into old habits – emotional eating, sugar cravings – but I didn’t. The pandemic became an opportunity to heal even more deeply. I created over 150 Ayurvedic recipes, each one designed to heal specific health challenges, including the skin issues that plagued me for so long.
My book, The Way of the Goddess, the very book I had to fight to publish despite attempts to silence my voice, went on to win eight national and international awards.
The Way of the Goddess is a book of daily rituals designed to awaken your inner warrior. And even more important than the accolades was the fact that I found my power. I surrendered to my journey of becoming a warrior in every sense of the word.
I started learning martial arts, something I never imagined I’d do. Running, which once filled me with fear and memories of shin splints from my teenage years, became a new daily practice.
Today, I receive compliments from fellow gym goers for my dedication to running and speed. ‘I thought you must have been a track star,’ said someone recently.
In actuality, as a 14-year-old freshman in high school, I had to quit the cross country team before the season even began due to extremely painful shin splints. ‘I swear, I’ll never run again,’ I told myself for over two decades.
Over a period of just 3 months, I leveled up my running each day, committing myself to doing something unprecedented – and just a little bit better than the day before – in terms of time and distance.
Today, my time for running a 5K would make me a competitive runner in races. But for me, running is not a competition. It is a spiritual practice, a place where I practice honoring my body’s needs while continuously transcending my limits – an interesting balance that is made possible by the wonders of Ayurveda’s lifestyle medicine.
Every day, I also make it a priority to work out twice – running in the morning and taking martial arts classes in the afternoon, pushing myself beyond what I once thought were my limits. But I always do this in a way that honors my body. I no longer view exercise as punishment or “making up” for something (as I did when I had anorexia) – for me, it’s about celebrating the strength and vitality within.
I see my body as my temple, and I treat it with the respect and love it deserves. This balance between pushing my boundaries and caring for myself is something Ayurveda has deeply taught me. It’s a beautiful relationship that nourishes my physical and spiritual growth without causing harm.
Today, my skin is clear and glowing again, from the inside-out, and I’m often mistaken for someone 15 or even 20 years younger. Even kids in my martial arts classes ask me if I am an adult!
Ayurveda has given me the gift of growing younger as I grow older – a gift I cherish every day and can’t wait to help you unwrap for yourself, too.
My professional background
Namaste. My name is Ananta Ripa Ajmera, and my journey to wellness through Ayurveda has been life-changing in ways I never imagined possible. Even though Western medicine told me I was in ‘excellent health,’ I knew something was wrong. I struggled for years with eating disorders, anxiety, and random aches and pains, plus painful periods and PTSD from abuse.
Like so many others, and possibly you too, I went on a quest to find healing through yoga classes, meditation retreats, various diets, and more, but nothing really worked long-term.
What changed everything for me was Ayurveda, the world’s most ancient healing system. Ayurveda taught me that our daily food and lifestyle choices are the root cause of most health issues. Until I learned to live in alignment with nature’s rhythms, I couldn’t truly heal.
Ayurveda Lifestyle Medicine wasn’t just about managing my symptoms – it was about addressing the deeper layers of my being and my daily habits.
My healing journey inspired me to write The Ayurveda Way, which won two national awards and was featured in top media outlets like Good Day New York, Forbes, New York Magazine, Radio MD, and MindBodyGreen.
I feel deeply grateful that my books have not only changed lives, but have also been recognized with multiple awards, including Gold and Silver Nautilus Awards that have previously been conferred to luminaries like Eckhart Tolle, Dr. Deepak Chopra, Malala Yousafzai, and Marianne Williamson.
I also feel grateful to have had the chance to bring Ayurveda’s timeless wisdom to major organizations, including Stanford School of Medicine, UNICEF, NYU, California Department of Public Health, and across prisons, where this training helps build resilience and positive health outcomes.
Through our Take Health Into Your Own Hands pilot programs, I witnessed incredible changes, including a 47% reduction in aches and pains, a 46% improvement in sleep quality, and significant increases in energy, productivity, and mental clarity. In fact, 98% of participants from the Stanford School of Medicine and Alameda County Probation Departments recommended the program, with 95% reporting a positive impact on their work performance.
These initial results were so compelling that Take Health Into Your Own Hands became certified to be offered across all California prisons and police stations – demonstrating just how powerful whole-person wellness can be for individuals and organizations alike.
In my work today, I collaborate with leading doctors and holistic practitioners as Advisor of Ayurveda at THE WELL, an integrated wellness center headquartered in New York City, with locations throughout the world.
